Should the version number (i.e. "Version 2.1.0" on the bottom of Guidelines generated pages actually be a link to a page explaining the version numbering system, listing all the releases (and those linking to the changelog of each release?). Alternatively, it could just point to the sourceforge download page, but I think that is less helpful.

Just today I fixed the description of versions in the Guidelines:
http://tei.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/tei/trunk/P5/Source/Guidelines/en/AB-About.xml?r1=10718&r2=10717&pathrev=10718
Another idea is to link to http://www.tei-c.org/Guidelines/P5/#previous . (I just created the anchor on this page and can rename it if you don't like it.)
If you want both the list of past versions and an explanation of numbers in one place, I could add a brief explanation of the Unicode version numbers to http://www.tei-c.org/Guidelines/P5/#previous and then we could link just to that page. But since the explanation of versions will soon be in the Guidelines itself, I'm less concerned about including the explanation of the version numbering system right from this link.
Would be nice to get a third perspective on this ...
This request seems to be about the formatting of the online Guidelines, so admirable though Kevin's update is, I don't think it addresses this issue. If there is a place to explain the version numbering in the body of the Guidelines, then I think it should be near the start (or end) of AB -- section iv (About these Guidelines) which is already linked to from every page. A page listing all the versions might be useful on the TEI website if you don't like what sourceforge already gives you I suppose.
When we've decided whether this is a "website suggestion" or a request for more text in the GL, and or a request for changes to the stylesheet ... please recategorise this ticket!
My previous comment was a bit unclear. While I fixed the description of versions in the Guidelines, this was incidental to the ticket at hand. However, what Lou suggests in his comment -- that we document version numbering in the body of the Guidelines in AB, section iv -- is exactly what I implemented at revision 10718.
What remains here is addressing deciding whether "Version 2.1.0" at the bottom of each HTML page should link to something and, if so, to what. My suggestion still stands to link from "Version 2.1.0" to http://www.tei-c.org/Guidelines/P5/#previous , which already lists past releases and from which a user can find the release notes if they know where to look. In my post below, I was just musing about whether this page should explain version numbers or rely on people finding that information in AB.
I've recategorized this ticket as "XSLT Stylesheet: New or Changed Feature".
This was assigned to me by Council at the Oxford 2012 meeting, so I'm claiming the ticket too. My intentions are:
1. Implement linking of the version number in the generated pages to AB.html#ABTEI4.
2. Expand AB.html#ABTEI4 a little to include a link to http://www.tei-c.org/Guidelines/P5/#previous.
Any objections? I'd like to do this today or tomorrow, ahead of the release on Wednesday.
Completed in revs 10989-10993. Closing the ticket.
