Now I'd like to tell you a story once again. It goes back to the very sources of our land, way up on Lake Beteas, in the times of Wisdom, during a Dance of the Spirits. 🌿
It was one of those Dances of the Spirits that we knew in the olden times, and in fact that we still know even to this day.
And so it was a day for the Dance of the Spirits in the times of Wisdom.
In those times of Wisdom, men had just entered into initiation. The next day, the moment was ripe to reveal the great Dance of the Spirits.
In preparation of this Dance of the Spirits, the initiates were first set in a Line.
They formed this Line before the entrance to the initiatory enclosure, as both a barrier and a decoration. And so they hung a traditional armband made of croton leaves on every stake that they planted; then they lined up these stakes opposite the entrance to the enclosure.
Next they looked for banana trees (fe'i), took off all the fruit, and brought back just the trunk; then they began to erect these banana tree trunks precisely alongside the Line of initiates.
In so doing, they followed the exact course of this line, from one end to the other. 🌿
The Dance of the Spirits is planned for the next day or the day after that.
For this Dance of the Spirits the huge slit drum will be brought out of the initiatory enclosure and carried to the public square, where everyone is preparing to dance.
As soon as the drum is brought out in the open, the men give the signal to mark the start of the dance — he does this four times.
After giving the signal four times (throwing leaves up into the air), the men begin their dance.
As soon as their dance started, they began to invoke the spirits.
According to which spirit they called for, it was that particular spirit that was invoked. As each spirit is invoked, someone must go and fetch him. 🌿
Some Spirits emanate from the origins of the world. These are the most important: they are simply geniuses of creation.
Vivlom; Kwetesuak; Wiri; Dilingsal: these are the greatest, coming to us from the dawn of time.
Et alors qu'ils dansent, dansent, dansent — apparaît Luwo.
And while they dance, dance, dance — Luwo appears.
Luwo, c'est le dernier.
Luwo is the last one.
Luwo is the most important of Spirits; he can even be considered to be their chief. 🌿
During this ball, whereas most of the Spirits are dancing around the main public square, Luwo sets off from the Line of initiates and dashes down the track as far as the edge of the square, where he stops to dance.
After dancing a long time on the same spot, he turns round and runs back to the initiatory house.
During that time, the others continue to move round in circles, dancing round the main square.
He goes back to the entrance of the initiatory enclosure, dances there for a while then dashes back down to the edge of the main square.
Seated all together, the women observe what's going on; they then stand up in a circle and look up towards the highlands.
And while they are looking up at the highlands, he turns his back on them.
He continues to dance while turning his back on these women looking at him.
He continues to dance until one of the women present suddenly falls in love with him.
He continues to dance and just as he leaves the edge of the public area to run back to the Hedge of Initiates, the woman sets out to pursue him.
As she clings on to his back to embrace him, they are both running up together! As for him, he realises that the woman ran off with him, and finally accepts to take her with him. 🌿
But then – as soon as he ran off with this woman, a new fight began! This was because Luwo had run away with a woman: this had to trigger a battle, between men and Spirits.
The battle began on the central area.
And in this ritual war, fighting was hand-to-hand, as well as with bow and arrow.
A few men and Spirits killed each other with arrows.
So many arrows were shot that soon the massacre was over; survivors ran for cover.
Quelques esprits s'enfuient d'un côté, quelques hommes s'enfuient de l'autre.
A few spirits fled to one side, a few men fled to the other.
In their flight, the men passed four Spirits who happened to be there.
At first they didn't recognise them: those four Spirits were in front of the Hedge of Initiates, eating fehi bananas.
Vivlom (“Zebra shark”), Wiri, Kwetesuak (“Fehi banana ”), Dilingsam: all four of them were eating bananas…
The assailants were stunned to see them up there, calmly perched in the banana trees.
They all rushed up to kill them.
They attack the first one, Vivlom, with a trident.
They blinded him in both eyes with their trident, and left him for dead.
Then they laid into Dilingsam. A man jumped on him without warning and began to hit him.
With one blow he broke his ear on one side, which hung on pitifully, then fled.
And then they laid into Wiri: they hit Wiri so violently that his tongue hung loose, falling onto his chest! He died instantly. 🌿
Finally, they turn against the drummer and begin to lynch him.
Two men beat him up right next to the big drum, before running away. Beaten up before his drum, he tries to escape, but his stiff legs prevent him from making a move.
The others take advantage and run up to him, surround him and begin to shoot arrows at him.
He was pierced with so many arrows from everywhere that he looked like a thicket of reeds.
Puis ils partent en courant.
Then they ran off.
That musician's companions now want to come and take his body away.
But they are afraid that [their enemies] might come charging back, that someone might come charging back to strike him again.
First, men are sent one after the other, at random; later one person is appointed, called Carangue.
He rushes over, vigorously picks up the musician's body; and carries it all the way along the path leading to the shore, and finally takes him with him out into the ocean before disappearing altogether. 🌿
This is the end of the story.
Ces Esprits, si importants encore aujourd'hui, s'appellent Toqor, Wmudmuduvul [Cheveux-longs], Wqetmat [Tête-de-mort], ou encore Bir.
These Spirits, still very important today, are called Toqor, Wmudmuduvul [Long hair], Wqetmat [death's head], or Bir.
These are the very first divinities from the beginning of time.
This, I believe, is the ritual legend that has been transmitted to us from the beginnings of our world, in the times of Wisdom, on the great Lake Beteas.
Yes, this is the end of the story.
