Title
Silicon Detectors for X-ray Experiments at Synchrotron Sources
Contributors
G M Iles
Abstract
The continuing emergence of synchrotron radiation as a unique tool for probing the structure of matter on the atomic scale has led to the construction of new facilities such as the ESRF in France, Spring-8 in Japan and APS in the United States. In the UK, DIAMOND is planned to replace the SRS, the current facility at Daresbury Laboratory. To fully exploit these brighter, higher energy, ultraviolet and X-ray sources new detectors are necessary, particularly for time resolved studies. Solid state detectors are an attractive potential replacement for current position sensitive X-ray detectors in either intergrating or photon counter mode. An 8x8 amplifier array of a highbrid pixel detector, purpose-built for X-ray applications, was tested by wire bonds to an adjacent pixel detector which allowed a 5.9KeV(55)Fe spectrum to be recorded. A novel detector for Energy Dispersive EXAFS (EDE) was designed, built and tested using silicon microstrip detector technology. The absorption spectra of a 5 micrometer Ni foil and a 25 micrometer NiCl(2) solution were obtained during tests of the system on the Material Science Station 9.3 at Daresbury Laboratory.
