Title Cluster studies of energetic electrons from tail reconnection
Contributors
Abstract There is considerable theoretical interest in electron energisation by magnetic reconnection, e.g. through interactions with waves present in the diffusion region around the reconnection X-line. Recent papers by several authors (Drake et al., 2005; Hoshino, 2005; Pritchett, 2005) suggest that significant fluxes may be accelerated to many tens or hundreds of keV and will escape from the diffusion region along magnetic separatices. However, there are only a few cases in which observations of such energetic electrons have been linked to reconnection (e.g. Ă˜ieroset, 2002). We present a preliminary review of Cluster RAPID energetic electron observations for cases where Cluster is thought to have come close to the tail reconnection X line. We show that there are some cases where energetic electron bursts can be associated with reconnection events, but also that there are many cases where studies are difficult because the data are swamped by the high fluxes of energetic electrons present in the plasmasheet during substorms.
