Title Space Weather Opportunities
Contributors
Abstract This presentation is intended to raise awareness about space weather among the meteorological community. In particular it aims to demonstrate that there are major similarities between the two disciplines - that both are concerned to develop and use physics-based models to understand and predict future conditions in complex natural environments. The presentation starts with a brief description of "What is Space Weather?". This followed by an outline of European space weather activities - in particular the ESA Space Weather Working Team as a focus for applications activities. The scope for cross-disciplinary links is discussed with particular focus on space weather effects in the upper atmosphere. This example demonstrates the commonality, especially in terms of techniques such numerical modelling, operational use of models and data assimilation. These are areas in which space weather can learn from meteorology, where the use of these techniques is more advanced.
