Abstract
Excited states have been observed for the first time in the neutron deficient nuclei Os-166 and Os-164. The nuclei were produced using the reactions Cd-106(Cu-63,p2n) Os-166, Sn-112(Ni-58,2p,2n) Os-166, and Cd-106(Ni-60,2n)Os-164 at beam energies of 292, 286, and 257 MeV, respectively. The gamma rays emitted by Os-166 and Os-164 were identified by correlating the associated recoil evaporation residues with their subsequent characteristic a decays. The deduced level schemes indicate that Os-166 and Os-164 continue the trend of decreasing deformation moving away from the N = 104 midshell. The level energy systematics of the low-spin states are presented.
