Title Residual elastic strain measurements and modelling of AISI 316L stainless steel cylinders subjected to spray quenching
Contributors
Abstract This study was aimed at modelling the deformation and residual stress states of AISI 316L stainless steel water spray quenched samples subjected. Heat transfer coefficients measured for the spray nozzles in flat plate geometry were applied in a thermo-mechanical Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the process allowing accurate prediction of the evolution of residual stress and residual elastic strains during quench spray processing. The FEA results were validated by residual elastic strain measurements using neutron diffraction. Good agreement achieved between measured and calculated results provides confidence that complex multi-phase flow and heat transfer interactions during thermomechanical processing can be modelled with insignificant error. These results provide a substantial improvement over the conventional approach whereby the metallurgical properties of quenched components are estimated by the application of average quench rates to the entire component.
