Abstract
ISIS, the spallation neutron source at the Rutherford Ap-pleton Laboratory in the UK, uses a 50 Hz, 800 MeV protonRCS to provide a beam power of 0.2 MW, delivered in 0.4μslong pulses. Detailed studies are now under way for a majorupgrade. Accelerator designs using FFAs, conventional ac-cumulator and synchrotron rings are being considered forthe required MW beam power. This paper summarises thescope of the different research incorporating results fromrecent target studies and user consultations. Preliminaryresults for Fixed Field Alternating gradient (FFA) rings andconventional rings located in the existing ISIS synchrotronhall are presented.
