The Local Adsorption Geometry of Alanine on Cu{110} studied by NEXAFS

Abstract
Metal-organic interfaces show a great variety of unusual surface phenomena which depend on the coverage and thermodynamic conditions, but also on the chemical states, molecular orientations and intermolecular bonding interactions at the surface. In many of these systems, supramolecular interactions govern the formation of superstructures, which depend on the balance of molecule-substrate and molecule-molecule interactions. Among the best studied metal organic surface systems are thin layers of the smallest chiral amino acid, alanine (OOC–CHNH2–CH3), on Cu{110}. Of particular technological interest is the fact that it forms chiral superstructures, which can exist in two distinguishable and non-superimposable mirror forms. In addition, this system provides a model for the behaviour of protein-based biomaterials and for heterogeneous asymmetric catalytic systems, where the molecule acts as chiral modifier stereo-directing reaction pathways. It has been shown that in the temperature range 300-470K alanine bonds strongly to the Cu{110} surface in its deprotonated alaninate form, with the integrity of the chiral centre preserved. The alaninate/Cu{110} system displays a variety of chiral and achiral surface superstructures; in this report we concentrate on the local adsorption structure within the (3x2) adsorbate layer.
