Monte-carlo simulation of the primary spectrometer on the proposed FIRES instrument

Abstract
Optimization of guide design for the proposed neutron backscattering instrument FIRES is discussed in the report, concluding that elliptic non-symmetric geometry being the most suitable for maximizing transmission. Comparison with the OSIRIS and IRIS instrument at ISIS is made. Significant gain is shown in the optimization of a simple linearly tapered curved guide with a gain of x2.3 over (2x3)cm squared sample area compared to the IRIS instrument. However, further gain is shown with elliptic tapering with x3.9 over (2x3)cm squared sample area. Yet further gain is also achieved with taking elliptic geometry to the full length of the guide from the biological shielding in the vertical while keeping curvature in the horizontal, with a gain of x4.1. Further investigation however is required in the non-symmetric elliptic from moderate option, with modification of the biological shielding due to an indicated gain in excess of x12 (increase 0f> x3 compared to the best set-up without biological shielding modification).
