Abstract
This short paper brings together some thoughts on the software engineering needs of ExaScale software development. The work was part of the efforts of Working Group 4.6 (Scientific Software Engineering) of EESI - the European ExaScale Software Initiative [1]. EESI is a Support Action co-funded by the European Commission. Its objective is to build a European vision and roadmap to address the challenges of the new generation of massively parallel systems composed of millions of heterogeneous cores which will provide multi-Peta op performances in the next few years and Exaflop performances in 2020.
