Title
HSL and Challenges in Sparse Direct Linear Solvers
Contributors
JD Hogg
Abstract
Sparse direct linear solvers are frequently used in mathematical optimization, finite-element methods and several less well-known fields. Often such problems are solved on desktop machines rather than large clusters. While several well-established solvers exist, research avenues in parallel direct solvers are far from exhausted. In particular, challenges remain relating to memory optimizations, the development of practical communication minimization techniques and achieving strong scaling for "small" problems on hundreds of cores. We will summarise what we see as the main challenges, and describe our recent and ongoing research in the area.
