Title Photon beam studies of magnetic materials
Contributors
Abstract This chapter discusses the photon beam studies of magnetic materials. Frenetic activity over the past few years by researchers at synchrotron light sources has established the value of photon beam techniques to investigate magnetic properties of materials. At the moment, the most productive area of work is with methods using linear and circular dichroism. Like elastic resonant diffraction, the capabilities of these methods are not shared by techniques based on neutron beams. Nonresonant scattering, including Bragg diffraction and Compton scattering, suffer the disadvantages that stem from the intrinsic weakness of the magnetic photon scattering interaction. The chapter surveys both a variety of recent experiments and a basic framework for the interpretation in terms of variables at the atomic level of description. Increased sensitivity in scattering experiments will open the way to more work on ferromagnetic materials. Different approaches could prove useful. The use in diffraction of high energy photon beams improves penetration, which increases the scattered intensity and decreases surface sensitivity, thereby making diffraction closer to a bulk probe as in neutron beam diffraction.
