Brief description Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. Current medical treatments are only symptomatic and are far from satisfatory. Many COPD patients use herbal medicines but evidence of effect is lacking. This study will determine the effect and safety of a standardised extract of Panax ginseng for patients with moderate COPD. The design of the study will combine rigorous randomised controlled trial methodology with Chinese medicine theory.
