Title Using LOFAR to probe the solar wind and the ionosphere
Contributors
Abstract The LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) is a radio telescope array centred on the Netherlands with international stations situated across Europe. It operates in the frequency ranges of 10-90MHz and 110-240MHz and has been designed with a number of scientific goals in mind covering a wide range of topics in radio astronomy. However, it's low frequencies also have applications in space weather: The technique of interplanetary scintillation has been used for many years to probe the solar wind throughout the inner heliosphere and this instrument is particularly suited to making detailed observations of the solar wind between the orbits of Mercury and Earth. Observations at these frequencies can also be strongly affected by the ionosphere, meaning both that observations can be used to probe the ionosphere, and that the effects of the ionosphere need to be calibrated for reliable measurements in radio astronomy observations. In this talk, we describe these ways of using the LOFAR telescope and present results obtained to date.
