Title Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) near real time images and 3-D reconstruction comparisons with multi-spacecraft observations during the rising phase of Solar Cycle 24
Contributors
Abstract The Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) has been operating since February 2003. At the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) we are now able to provide photometric images from SMEI in near real time. These are available in quick-look form as orbit-to-orbit difference sky maps in a variety of formats. A series of editing steps and a tomography program cleans these data sets of aurora and provides three-dimensional (3-D) volumetric density soon after the images become available, and allows us to map the 3-D density extents of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and co-rotating structures. Here, we report on observations and 3-D reconstructions from SMEI during the current rising phase of Solar Cycle 24. We match our analyses with in-situ densities from spacecraft near Earth as well as at the two STEREO spacecraft. These include both direct in-situ density variation comparisons and measurements of columnar mass fluxes for different events. These comparisons show the continuity of the structures that match in-situ density measurements at each spacecraft, and their extensions beyond the ecliptic plane.
