Title Neutron scattering – A technique to interrogate molecular changes coming out of the vitreous state
Contributors
Abstract Understanding biophysical change in cryo-banked samples at ultra-low temperatures is one important step in optimising cryopreservation strategies. The range of techniques which can make reproducible measurements in the cryogenic temperature range is inevitably limited, and neutron scattering (NS) is one such technique. NS has been applied to initial studies on a previously reported vitrification solution (VS) cooled to and warmed from below ?170 °C. The data show evidence of ice recrystallization as samples warm through the temperature zone (around ?120 °C) where the glass transition is predicted. Measurements made by differential scanning calorimetry of the same VS sample provided evidence of a glass transition in the same temperature range. The results highlight the potential for use of NS in cryobiological studies.
