Abstract
A numerical study of electro-osmotic flow through micro-channels has been completed. The results show that, contrary to common assumptions, the pressure changes associated with a sudden contraction (inflow) and expansion (outflow) are responsible for the induced pressure gradient along the channel. This is the key to understanding experimentally observed leakage flow. From the results, a new set of boundary conditions at the entrance and outlet are proposed. The new boundary conditions decouple the flow field in the channel from the reservoirs and are physically more representative than those presented previously and are capable of capturing the phenomenon of leakage flow.
