Title A comparative analysis of methodologies, tools and languages used for building ontologies
Contributors
Abstract An Ontology is a formal specification of a certain domain. At present they are widely used by different communities for different purposes. During the process of building an ontology several questions arise related to the methodologies, tools and languages that should be used in the process of development. Currently ontologies are implemented in a large variety of languages and development tools. This report aims to review and compare the main methodologies, tools and languages available for building ontologies. Additionally, Topic Maps, SKOS (Simple knowledge Organisation systems) and Ontology management systems and will be evaluated with respect to the building of heavy and lightweight ontologies. Most of today¿s tools support creation and editing but there is still a lack of tools that facilitate the deployment and maintenance of ontologies. Consequently the problems with deployment of ontologies will also be discussed.
