Title Data Mining using the Data Portal for the NESSI Project
Contributors
Abstract The Neutron Science Software Initiative (NeSSI) is a project combining three Spallation Neutron Sources from across the world. These are ISIS, SNS and J-PARC from UK, US and Japan respectively. As instruments are being designed for High Flux Isotope Reactors, Spallation Neutron Sources, and other neutron sources, there is an unprecedented opportunity to provide superior data analysis software capabilities for scientific users. Before these analysis capabilities can be provided, users need a way of managing and gaining access to the large amounts of data these sources can generate. The Data Portal project aims to provide the distributed searching capabilities by giving easy, transparent access to experimental, simulation and visualisation data kept on their multitude of systems and sites. Further more it will provide links to other grid services, which will allow the scientists to further use the selected data, e.g. to run their data analysis software. The Data Portal will aim to work as a broker between the scientists, the instruments, the data and other services. The problem addressed is that currently the scientific data is stored distributed across a multitude of sites and systems. Scientific users have only very limited support in accessing, managing and transferring their data or indeed in identifying new data resources. In a true Grid environment, it is essential to ease many of these processes and the aim of the Data Portal is to help with automating many of these tasks.
