Title Space weather issues for defence and security
Contributors
Abstract This presentation outlines space weather and its impact on systems relevant to security and defence. A number of key cases are presented with emphasis on space weather effects in the ionosphere. These affect many systems used for communications and surveillence. Thus awareness of space weather is vital for the specification, design and operation of such systems, especially in the defence and security domain where 24/7 availability is essential. This is area in which there is considerable scope for knowledge transfer from the PPARC STP community, e.g. through the adaption of science models to build engineering tools.
