Abstract
Nonlinear wave processes at the lower hybrid resonance frequencies are extremely important in transfering energy between different particle populations and fields in plasmas. In this paper we investigate particle acceleration resulting from the relaxation of unstable ion ring distributions, producing strong wave activity at the lower-hybrid resonance frequency which undergoes wave collapse to produce energetic electron and ion tails. We apply the results to explaining energetic particle production in solar flares. Unstable ion distributions are assumed to be formed in either quasi-perpendicular shocks or in tearing modes. Numerical simulations of ion-ring relaxation processes obtained using a 2 1/2-D fully electromagnetic, relativistic particle in cell mode are presented. The results show the simultaneous energization of both electrons and ions to very high energies. The electrons are accelerated to energies in the region of 10-50 ke V, while the ions are accerelated to energies in the region of 20Me V. The accerelated electrons and ions can easily account for the solar flare x-ray and y-ray observations.
