Title Orbital Angular Momentum from SASE
Contributors
Abstract To reach very short wavelengths and high intensities oflight, free-electron lasers, FELs, are used which produce radiation from amplified noise in an electron beam. In this SASE regime, mode competition dictates that the dominanttransverse mode of the radiation will be Gaussian. A methodis proposed to suppress the Gaussian mode via phase shiftswhich allows higher order Laguerre-Gaussian modes to beamplified. These modes are of interest as they carry orbitalangular momentum, OAM. Techniques for generating OAM radiation with a FEL have been proposed previously, how-ever, this is the first look at altering mode competition inorder to get a dominant OAM mode starting from the initial shot noise in the electron beam.
