Title Environmental Informatics at RAL : an overview
Contributors
Abstract Environmental problems are among the most pressing of our time - biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainability all represent major challenges. By their very nature these problems extend beyond political boundaries, and solutions rely heavily on an objective evidence base. In order to better understand environmental pressures, and develop appropriate responses, the emerging field of Environmental Informatics is helping develop solutions to the difficulties of information management and integration in a distributed, cross-disciplinary, heterogeneous environment. We present an overview of Environmental Informatics and describe frameworks that are being adopted for information modelling and system architecture, before reviewing their application in several areas: data infrastructures, sensor webs, and system of systems. We also examine the role of grid computing. These areas are illustrated with examples of projects undertaken within the Environmental Informatics program of the STFC e-Science Centre at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
