Title Experiment Control and Data Acquisition at PETRA III, DESY
Contributors
Abstract PETRA III (1) is a highly brilliant 3rd generation synchrotron radiation source at DESY in Hamburg. It consists of 14 beamlines which are operated by DESY, EMBL and HZG. By now most of them are in user operation, the others are currently commissioned. The talk will cover the experiment control and data acquisition system which is used by the 11 DESY and HZG beamlines. For PETRA III the online control system had to be redesigned to cope with the complexity of the newly created beamlines, to meet the demanding requirements of user interfaces and to handle the huge amount of data which is generated by modern 2D detectors. The new system uses Tango (2) for the communication between the device layer and the user interfaces. Users interact with the system through graphical and command line interfaces or scripts which are mainly written in Python or Perl. It is foreseen to replace the current main control program Online by the Sardana (4) framework which has a state-of-the-art design offering a high flexibility. The talk will explain the basic concepts of the PETRA III control system and report the experiences which have been made during the last 3 years of operation. References 1.
